BioBiz is a Timaru based company established by: Brian and Carol Gallagher in March 2006. Our mission is to help rejuvenate
biological ecosystems in soils and plants. In achieving this we intend
to help reinstate an aspect of land based production systems that in modern
times has been forgotten. By returning biological populations back to healthy
ratios, a range of benefits may be achieved including:
We will provide quality products and services to help with sustainable production practices as well as help create highly nutritious crops and produce. |

OUR SERVICESContact us for a free consultation. We will work with you to help implement a sustainable approach to your soil and foliar production systems. An all encompassing approach is required that takes into consideration not only the biology but the chemistry and physical requirements of soil and crops as well. Our programme is about recreating an overall balance and we take into consideration other inputs as required. Mineralisation of elements, in particular calcium and phosphorous, are essential in contributing towards highly nutritional produce. Through our range of biological inoculums we are able to enhance the mineralisation process by helping reinstate an active biomass to soil and foliar ecosystems. Total extractable nutrients are often referred as being tied up in the soil. These nutrients can become available through improved soil biology. Similarly nitrogen can be released by nitrogen fixing bacteria when eaten by micro-organisms called protozoa. This concept is about the re-establishment of the complete food chain which will help create improved nutritional capacity for produce. Currently we have the capacity to supply and apply 4,000 litres of inoculum per day. Application rates and additional feeders will vary depending upon site and crop specific circumstances. In order to manage properly you will need to measure your soil and plants. It will be necessary to test to assess the chemical and biological status to help determine a suitable programme for your particular situation.

SOME WORRYING TRENDS - Nitrate leaching. - Water competition and shortage. - Soil compaction - Increasing costs of fuel and fertiliser. - Stock health - Herbicide/pesticide applications. - Human health issues linked to food and nutrition.
By improving the soil health and ensuring a biologically active soil, some of these issues can be addressed within 1-3 years depending upon the current state of your soil. People are becoming more aware about what they eat and how their food is produced. Farming and production practises are being increasingly scrutinised. Tasty, safe to eat, nutritious food is the optimum market to be trading in.

Research Information As we develop this web site we intend to provide further information from approved sources and as it becomes available from various organisations. Researchers in the UK have found that there is increasing evidence that the use of uncomposted plant residues, composts, manures and compost extracts can help with the reduction of pesticide use, improvement of yield without losing market share. Critical Review of Plant Sciences; The Role of Uncomposted Materials, Composts, Manures, and Compost Extracts in Reducing Pest and Disease Incidence and Severity in Sustainable Temperate Agricultural and Horticultural Crop Production-A Review. A.M Litterick & L Harrier, C.A. Watson, Crop & Soil Research Group; P.Wallace, Enviros;, M.Wood, Dept. Soil Science, University Reading. Further information and research papers can also be found at the following web sites. New Zealand Developments Brian has been involved since 2002 in various trials throughout New Zealand. Early developments on a dairy farm at “Ealing Pastures” in Mid Canterbury from 2003 have seen an initial 6 hectare trial expand upwards to 120 hectares after 2 years of on farm trials. Improved soil structure and reduced fertiliser applications have provided the impetus to expand the programme. Brian has also helped initiate the inclusion of a trial programme with Rippon Vineyard in Central Otago. After initial trials in 2004 the programme has now been rolled out to include the full vineyard. The biological concept is very complimentary to the biodynamic principles and concepts of sustainability practised at Rippon.
